Assumptions (shown clearly): Gross hours = PIPR all-property average monthly rent ÷ £12.71 NLW. Working days = gross hours ÷ 7.5 (illustrative). RLW hours use £13.45 (UK) or £14.8 (London only). Net hours use this site's take-home engine for a full-time (40 hrs/week) NLW worker on tax code 1257L, no pension, no student loan — effective net hourly ≈ £10.8433 (≈ £1879.51/month take-home). Scotland: uses 2026/27 Scottish income tax bands (tax code S1257L; starter 19% / basic 20% / intermediate 21% — gov.uk/scottish-income-tax); employee NI is UK-wide and matches the site engine. Northern Ireland: PIPR price level unavailable in the latest months — shown as unavailable.

National Living Wage vs Real Living Wage

Statutory NLW is £12.71/hour (21+, from 1 April 2026). The voluntary Real Living Wage is £13.45 (UK) and £14.8 (London) for 2025–26 (Living Wage Foundation). Gap: £0.74/hour UK · £2.09/hour London. Paying the Real Living Wage shortens the hours needed to cover average rent (see table column).

Methodology

Gross hours = PIPR average monthly private rental price (all properties) ÷ 12.71.

Working days = gross hours ÷ 7.5 (illustrative full working day; not a statutory figure).

Hours at Real Living Wage = rent ÷ 13.45 (or ÷ 14.80 for London).

Net hours = rent ÷ net hourly. For England, Wales and Northern Ireland, net hourly comes from this site's take-home calculator for £12.71 × 40 hrs/week × 52 weeks on tax code 1257L (personal allowance £12,570; basic-rate income tax 20%; employee NI 8% between PA and £50,270). Resulting annual net ≈ £22554.1, net hourly ≈ £10.8433. No pension, no student loan.

Scotland: net hours use 2026/27 Scottish income tax bands from GOV.UK Scottish Income Tax (personal allowance £12,570; starter 19% up to £16,537; basic 20% up to £29,526; intermediate 21% up to £43,662), tax code S1257L, no pension or student loan. At £12.71 × 40 × 52 (£26,436.80 gross) that is about £2,733.69 income tax + £1,109.34 employee NI → ≈ £22,593.77 annual net (≈ £10.86 net hourly). Employee NI is UK-wide and matches the site engine. Gross hours are unaffected.
